Fringed & Tasselled Throws

A fringe on a woven throw is not decoration bolted on. It is the warp threads carried past the last weft pick, and it only stays put because each group is knotted. That knot is what stops the cloth unravelling into the body of the throw.

A cut fringe with no knot is the single most common defect we see on cheap throws. It looks identical on the shelf and it starts travelling the first time it goes through a wash, and by then it is not fixable.

So we specify the finish rather than describing it: hand-knotted fringe, tied tassels at the corners, a double-folded hem, or a whipstitched edge. All four are legitimate. A raw cut edge is not, and we will not ship one however good it looks in a photograph.

Why does a fringe unravel?

Because it is the warp of the cloth itself. Unless each group is knotted, washing pulls those threads and the unravelling travels up into the body of the throw. A knotted fringe cannot do that.

Is a hem less premium than a fringe?

No, just different. A double-folded hem or a whipstitched edge is cleaner, launders better and suits a modern design. Choose on the look, because both hold equally well.
